Maël Balluet received his PhD. in Robotics and Signal Processing in 2021 from Rennes University (ED MathSTIC), France. During his doctoral studies, he worked on the development of a smart and autonomous microscope prototype, integrating real-time image classification through machine learning techniques.

Following his PhD., Maël worked for three years as a research and development engineer at Celec, a company specializing in electronic sensors, primarily for sanitary ware applications. He spent two years in France and one year in China, designing sensors based on various detection methods, such as infrared and capacitive sensing. He was involved in the full product development cycle, such as defining specifications, designing electronic circuits, programming microcontrollers, conducting functional and EMC testing, overseeing quality control, and supporting mass production.

In 2025, Maël joined the Hangzhou International Innovation Institute of Beihang University as an Assistant Professor. His current research focuses on the development of real-time embedded reinforcement learning solutions for energy-efficient and autonomous drone flight control. This work covers multiple disciplines, including low-power hardware design, embedded software development, Tiny Machine Learning, and drone prototyping.

Maël’s teaching philosophy is shaped by his combined experience in academia and industry. He aims to prepare students for both research and engineering careers by offering a multidisciplinary approach based on real-world applications. His research offers students the opportunity to explore various scientific disciplines, allowing them to focus on specific areas of interest while learning the unique constraints and challenges associated with each field.
