Frequency selective surfaces (FSS) are engineered electromagnetic structures that achieve frequency-dependent transmission or reflection through periodic geometries, and are widely used in radar stealth, wireless communications, and electromagnetic compatibility. Intelligent FSS further integrate tunable mechanisms—such as deformable structures, liquid crystals, or two-dimensional materials—demonstrating great potential in dynamic spectrum management and adaptive communication systems.
Our research focuses on multiphysics coupled modeling, broadband/multiband structural design, and low-voltage reconfiguration strategies. Intelligent FSS offer advantages including structural simplicity, large-area manufacturability, and significant enhancement of electromagnetic environmental adaptability. Key challenges include maintaining material and structural stability, reducing energy consumption of tuning mechanisms, and ensuring high performance in extreme environments. Students in this direction will gain interdisciplinary expertise in electromagnetic theory, materials science, and RF engineering, building a strong foundation for future communication technologies.
