Professor Luciano Pietronero has long been engaged in research on condensed matter theory, statistical physics, and complexity science, dedicated to developing verifiable quantitative theories and computational methods to understand the structure, dynamics, evolution, and prediction of complex systems across various scales. His work spans multiple fields, from nanoscale material systems to large-scale cosmic structures and socio-economic systems. Currently, he focuses on econophysics, primarily applying physical theories and methods such as statistical physics and nonlinear dynamics to study economic issues like financial markets and corporate growth.

Condensed Matter Theory and Unconventional Superconductivity
Research on high-temperature superconductivity, electron-phonon interactions, nonadiabatic superconductivity, strongly correlated electronic systems, and complex Fermi-liquid behavior. A central focus is the development of many-body approaches beyond Migdal’s theorem and their applications to cuprates, fullerene compounds, MgB₂, and related materials.Statistical Physics, Fractal Growth, and Self-Organized Criticality
Research on fractal and multifractal structures, dielectric breakdown, diffusion-limited aggregation, percolation, interface growth, and sandpile models. Development of the Fitness-Complexity framework, which uses nonlinear iterative algorithms on bipartite networks to quantify countries’ productive capabilities, product complexity, industrial competitiveness, and development potential.
