We study obsidian glasses from ancient Mexican sources to investigate their mechanical response, including fracture toughness, microhardness, and nanohardness. Laboratory measurements are integrated with geological and archaeological perspectives to establish links between glass composition, formation processes, and mechanical performance. Through close collaboration with geologists and archaeologists, this work explores how the engineering properties of obsidian influenced its selection, use, and societal impact in pre-Hispanic cultures.
